• Coffee with Claire Saturday, July 26th 10am-noon 1823 W. Cannon Place Lane, Spokane (Polly Judd Park) Free Event (Please register so we know how many to expect) Claire Rudolf Murphy is a 25-year veteran of children’s’/YA publishing with more than seventeen books for young readers, from picture books to novels to longer nonfiction. Currently she serves on the faculty of Hamline University’s MFAC, a graduate creative writing program for children’s writers. Several years ago when the market changed for her school/library kind of books, Claire took steps to improve her writing and become more competitive. She will share some of the challenges she has overcome, and lead an open discussion and sharing, along with exercises to help participants identify their own challenges and identify coping strategies and goals for their writing life. Bring a notebook and your own questions. “It is important take conscious steps to create a writing life that works for you,” Claire says. “You’ll face decisions about time management, what genre suits a story, how to get the feedback you need before and after you find a writing group, an agent, an editor. I’ve learned through trial and error how important it is to think clearly, and act bravely and with intention. The publishing business is always changing and writers need to keep improving their craft as well as maintaining a support system.”
