February 2019 Updates

Update from February 8, 2019

The SCBWI Golden Kite Gala kicks off the NYC Winter Conference tonight (2pm Pacific). You can watch the live feed on SCBWI’s Facebook page. Here in the Inland Northwest, we have a Golden Kite celebration of our own. Annette Bay Pimentel’s non-fiction book,GIRL RUNNING: BOBBI GIBB AND THE BOSTON MARATHON, was recognized as a Golden Kite Honor Book. Congratulations, Annette! Find out more about the Golden Kite Awards here.

If you’re feeling a bit snowed-in this weekend, you can follow the conference on the official SCBWI conference blog.

New Spokane Critique Group

Katie Frey is organizing a new Middle Grade critique group in Spokane. The first meeting will be held on Monday, February 18, 9:00 am at Rockwood Bakery. (Google for directions.) This group is open to new members, so stop by to discover how you can improve your work with constructive peer critique.

Conference Updates

Our September 21st conference is coming together. We’ve lined up an editor, some agents, and authors—oh my! We even have an author/illustrator coming this year. Want to hear more? Register today to attend our Conference Planning Meeting on Saturday, March 2nd at 10:00 am. This meeting will take place online using Zoom Meetings. From the comfort of home, you can learn some behind-the-scenes details, share your ideas, and discover how you can lend a helping hand. All conference volunteers will get special perks, and most jobs only require an hour of your time.

Upcoming Webinar

Speaking of perks, our Volunteer Webinar is coming up on March 30th. Straight from the SCBWI Conference in L.A., author Sue Fliess will share her breakout session with our Inland Northwest volunteers. “Tips for Breaking In” will give you the encouragement you need to make connections in order to reach your publishing goals.  If you would like an invitation, reply to this email or tune-in to our Conference Planning Meeting. Our Volunteer Chair will let you know what jobs need filling, and if you’re able to help, I’ll make sure you get an invite. (If you are on the Conference Committee, are a Local Coordinator, or Advisory Board Member, you are on my list.)

SCBWI Mixers

In conjunction with the #YASurvivalTour, SCBWI is organizing a couple of mixers.
