for the SCBWI Inland NW RISE & SHINE Conference
Our annual conference for children’s book writers and illustrators includes workshops led by agents and editors, individual manuscript and portfolio consultations, a local author panel, a portfolio showcase, and optional mini-intensives on Friday for novelists and for writers and illustrators of picture books.
To encourage and nurture children’s book writers and illustrators from backgrounds that are underrepresented in the children’s publishing industry, we’re excited to offer one Inclusivity Scholarship to attend our fall conference and receive a manuscript critique or a portfolio review. (Travel expenses not included.)
If you are from an underrepresented group (if, for example, you identify as a person of color, Native American, LGBTQIA, person with a disability, or are part of a marginalized religious or cultural minority), we encourage you to apply. Although we don’t choose recipients based on financial need, we ask applicants to keep in mind those writers and illustrators who could not otherwise attend the conference without this opportunity.
In the body of an email, please include the following information:
A brief statement (250 words, max) about how you personally identify with a community that is underrepresented in children’s literature and how this conference could benefit you.
Up to 5 pages of a single written project (double spaced, 1-inch margins all around, in a word document format), and/or up to 5 illustrations. Please make sure your name doesn’t appear anywhere on these pages.
Send your application, and any questions you have, to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Applications are due by 11:59 PM on Monday, July 1 DEADLINE EXTENDED! Applications accepted through September 1st, 2019.
Please note: This scholarship is open to members and non-members of SCBWI that live within the Inland Northwest region (eastern WA & N. ID). You must be 18 years of age or older to attend an SCBWI conference.
Applicants will be notified by email on or before September 10, 2019.
