Individual Consultations are available for an additional charge of $50. At the time of registration you will select the faculty member you feel is best suited to critique your work. Please review their bios and spend a few minutes on a Google search. This is a unique opportunity to sit down with an industry professional. You’ll want to ensure you choose the best match for your story and/or artwork.
Keep in mind, this is not a pitch session. A consultation is an opportunity to receive feedback and professional critique. SCBWI offers individual consultations to writers and illustrators that are ready to have their work reviewed by an agent, editor, published author, or illustrator. It can be a daunting experience, but these consultations are a wonderful chance to get exposure, experience, and a valuable critique of your work.
Manuscript Consultation: Writers may submit the first ten pages of one manuscript: a picture book, easy reader, novel, non-fiction (manuscript or proposal), or up to three short poems. For novels, please include a synopsis. Further instructions can be found here. These instructions will also be emailed to registered participants in August.
Portfolio and/or Dummy Consultation: Artists will send 3-5 digital samples from their physical portfolio or picture book dummy. If submitting a dummy, the full manuscript will also be sent. A full portfolio and/or dummy should be brought to the conference consultation. Further instructions can be found here. These instructions will also be sent by email to registered participants in August.
Query Consultation: In addition to the above, writers and illustrators that select a query consultation can submit a query letter in addition to the materials listed above. This opportunity is for those that have received multiple critiques on their work and are preparing to submit to agents. **Please note, not every faculty member is offering a query consultation. If this is the type of feedback you would like, choose appropriately. Further instructions can be found here. These instructions will also be emailed to registered participants in August.
All materials are due by 11:59 pm on August 21, 2019. Late materials will not be accepted and no refunds will be given.
