The February 2020 recommended book from Annette Bay Pimentel is… Reading Picture Books with Children by Megan Dowd Lambert, illustrated by Chris Raschka.

“When children are reading a picture book, they’re engaging with words and art. But they’re also touching and manipulating a physical object. Words and art nest inside a book’s print conventions, all of which are carefully designed to carry story to the reader. Megan Dowd Lambert examines how the book jacket, the end papers, typeface choice, book orientation, and other book elements work with story in Reading Picture Books with Children (Charlesbridge: 2015).

I originally read this book when I was trying to design a school visit for my picture book Girl Running. Lambert’s suggestions helped me transform and elevate my school visits, but to my surprise her book also transformed how I write and revise my picture book texts. It gave me new ideas about how to leave room for an illustrator and transformed the way I think about structuring stories. All from thinking about what kids will actually be doing when they hold my book in their hands.

I invite you to read the book and join me in discussing it in our first Creativity Support Book Club meeting. We’ll meet online April 30 at 7 PM. ”

Annette’s new book comes out in March! All the Way to the Top:  How One Girl’s Fight for Americans with Disabilities Changed Everything is the true story of how an eight-year-old girl became a disability rights activist and captured Congress’s attention with her demonstration in support of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Find out more here.
