The Inland Northwest Regional Retreat will give writers and illustrators the opportunity to get away and focus on their work. If you like, you can take breaks to socialize or work with others in groups, and you can sign up to work closely with Senior Editor Karen Chaplin or Art Director Melissa Nelson Greenberg.

Karen Chaplin is a Senior Editor acquiring and editing picture books, middle-grade, and young adult fiction and nonfiction for HarperCollins Children’s Books / Harper Teen. She started her publishing career at Scholastic, and was an editor at Puffin Books/Penguin Young Readers Group for six years before she moved to HaperCollins.

She has worked with New York Times bestselling authors Tim Green, Amy Ewing (The Jewel trilogy), as well as Margot Lee Shetterly (Hidden Figures Young Readers’ Edition and picture book); PW Flying Start Paul Mosier (Train I Ride); two-time Edgar Award Nominee Lamar Giles (Fake ID and Endangered); Caela Carter (ALA Notable Forever, or a Long, Long Time); Jennifer Lynn Alvarez (The Guardian Herd series; Riders of the Realm series); Rebecca Ross (The Queen’s Rising); and Paula Stokes (Liars, Inc., Girl Against the Universe), among others.

Melissa Nelson Greenberg is an award-winning art director, designer, and fine artist.

For the last 16 years, she has designed and art directed hundreds of children’s books at Knopf/Random House Children’s Books and run her own design business, Melisse Design. She is now happily ensconced in the sunny world of Cameron + Co, where work is about great ideas, collaboration, and good design.
